Why Trash Bags Split, and How to Stop It

A bag that fails is usually blamed on the bag. Most failures come from five avoidable causes, and only one of them is that the plastic is too thin.

Updated Oct 6, 2026

When a bag splits, the instinct is to buy a thicker one. Sometimes that is right. More often the bag was fine and something about how it was used overloaded it. Working out which saves you money, because a heavier bag fixes only one of the causes below.

1. Overfilling

A full bag is a heavy bag, and the load that matters is at the seam and at the point where you lift it. A 55-gallon bag of dense waste can weigh well over 40 pounds, far more than the film was ever meant to carry by its top edge.

Fix: tie off before the bag is full, around two-thirds to three-quarters, and lift from the base with the other hand rather than hauling by the knot. For dense waste, use two half-full bags instead of one full one.

2. Sharp edges and point loads

A single corner of a carton or a protruding nail is enough, because the load concentrates on one small spot and a puncture then tears along the film. Thin high-density film is especially prone to this.

Fix: wrap sharp items in cardboard or paper before bagging, and break down cartons so the corners face inward. Where sharp debris is unavoidable, that is the one time to move up to a 3.0 mil bag.

3. Vacuum lock

This one surprises people. When a full bag is lifted out of a tight, smooth drum, air cannot get in behind it, and suction holds the bag down. Pulling harder stretches and tears the film, usually near the base.

Fix: drill a small vent hole in the lower side of the drum, or use a bin with vents built in. Lifting should take a second, with no resistance. If it feels stuck, stop and let air in rather than pulling.

4. The wrong size

A bag that is too small is stretched taut across the rim, which thins and weakens it before anything goes in. A bag that is far too large bunches under the weight and folds sharply at the base. Our guide to trash bag sizes shows how to match the bag to the bin.

Fix: measure the bin and choose a bag with a few inches of overhang, not a stretched fit.

5. Cold

Polyethylene stiffens in low temperatures. A bag stored in an unheated store in winter, or a skip area below freezing, loses flexibility and cracks along folds that would bend in warmer weather. High-density film suffers most.

Fix: keep the stock indoors, and let a cold carton come up to room temperature before you open it.

6. Treatment after the bag is full

Dragging a bag across a rough floor wears a hole in the base. Throwing it into a skip loads the seams suddenly. Stacking bags against a pallet edge or a stack of crates punctures them in transit.

Fix: lift and carry, or use a trolley. It is the cheapest fix on the list and the one most often ignored.

When thicker really is the answer

If the cause is sharp or heavy waste that cannot be changed, a heavier bag is the correct response, and the arithmetic in our comparison of contractor and standard bags shows where it pays. Check the other five first. A thicker bag does nothing for vacuum lock, overfilling or a bag that is too small.
