A mailer made from compostable film rather than polyethylene. The material breaks down in an industrial composting environment within the window its certification specifies, which makes it the right choice for brands whose customers expect a disposal route that is not plastic recycling.
Compostable film behaves a little differently on the bench. It has slightly more give than poly, the seal strip needs a firm press along its full length, and it should be stored somewhere cool and dry — the material is designed to degrade, so a hot storeroom shortens its shelf life.
Read this before you print a claim: “compostable” in this context normally means industrially compostable, not home compostable, and the two are different certifications. Most consumers do not have access to industrial composting. Are these home compostable?
Assume no unless the certificate for your specific run says otherwise. The standard certification for this film is industrial composting, which needs sustained temperatures a garden heap does not reach. We send the run certificate with every quote so you can see exactly what you are buying.
How long do they last in storage?
Around twelve months in a cool, dry store away from sunlight. Because the film is designed to break down, heat and humidity shorten that. Order in quantities you will use within a couple of quarters rather than stockpiling a year of supply.
Why are they three times the price of poly mailers?
The raw film costs substantially more per kilo and the runs are shorter. If cost per parcel is the deciding factor, recycled poly mailers are usually the better trade-off; compostable film makes sense when the disposal story is genuinely part of what you are selling.
Can I print on them?
Yes, with compostable inks. Printing is quoted separately and adds to the lead time — allow three to four weeks for a first printed run.
