Hand Wrap vs a Pallet Wrapping Machine
A wrapping machine pays for itself on film alone, long before you count the labour. Here is the arithmetic and the pallet count where it turns.

Every warehouse reaches a point where hand wrapping stops making sense, and most reach it well before they notice. The trigger is not usually labour cost — it is film.
A person cannot stretch film properly
This is the whole argument, and it is a physical fact rather than a criticism of anyone.
Stretch film at 80 gauge will extend roughly 250% before it yields. A powered wrapper pre-stretches film mechanically and routinely achieves 200–250%. A person walking backwards around a pallet, holding a roll on a dispenser, typically achieves 15 to 30%.
The consequence is that hand wrapping uses somewhere between two and four times as much film to hold the same load — and holds it less well, because the restraining force comes from the tension the film is under.
The arithmetic
Work it in pallets per day, since that is the number you already know.
A pallet wrapped by hand uses roughly 45–60 ft of film. The same pallet on a machine uses roughly 20–25 ft. Call the saving 30 ft per pallet, conservatively.
- 10 pallets a day — 300 ft saved daily, about 78,000 ft a year, or 52 rolls of 1500 ft.
- 25 pallets a day — roughly 130 rolls a year.
- 50 pallets a day — roughly 260 rolls a year.
At wholesale film prices that 25-pallet case is saving comfortably over a thousand dollars a year in film alone — around 130 rolls. Add ninety seconds of labour per pallet, which is a real figure, and the picture changes completely.
Where the threshold actually sits
Around 15 to 20 pallets a day, a semi-automatic turntable wrapper typically pays back inside twelve to eighteen months on film and labour together.
Below ten a day, hand wrapping is usually the right answer. The machine sits idle, takes floor space you could use, and the saving does not justify the capital.
Between ten and fifteen it depends on your labour cost and whether your pallets are consistent enough to run through a turntable without babysitting.
What people forget to count
- Film is not interchangeable. Machine rolls are longer, wider and wound differently. You cannot feed hand rolls into a wrapper, so the changeover is a clean break rather than a gradual one.
- Floor space. A turntable needs clear area around it plus fork access.
- Consistency matters more. A machine wraps every pallet identically, which is worth something on its own — your damage rate stops depending on who was on shift.
- Injury risk. Hand wrapping is repetitive bending and twisting at pace. It is a real source of back and shoulder claims in warehouses.
Semi-automatic or fully automatic?
Semi-automatic means an operator places the pallet, attaches the film and presses a button. It covers the overwhelming majority of warehouses and is a fraction of the cost.
Fully automatic wrapping belongs on a conveyor line running hundreds of pallets a day. If you are reading this to decide, you want semi-automatic.
If you are staying with hand wrap
Get a proper dispenser with a tension brake. It costs very little and it is the difference between film that holds and film that is merely present. Most hand-wrapping waste comes from a roll held on a bare core with no tension control at all.
