Why Your Packing Tape Keeps Failing
Tape that lifts at the corners is almost never a tape problem. It is usually the board, the temperature or the way the carton was sealed.

Tape failure is one of the few packaging problems with an obvious symptom and a non-obvious cause. The tape lifted, so the tape must be bad — except that in most warehouses the tape is fine and something else is wrong.
Recycled board is the usual culprit
Modern corrugated contains a high proportion of recycled fibre. Recycled board has a dustier, looser surface than virgin kraft, and adhesive needs a clean surface to form a bond with.
The tape appears to stick, then lifts an hour later as the bond fails against loose surface fibres. It looks exactly like a defective roll.
If this is your problem, the fixes are: press the tape down firmly rather than laying it on, use a slightly more aggressive adhesive, or widen from 48 mm to 75 mm so there is more surface area doing the work.
Cold is the second cause
Adhesives have a minimum application temperature, typically around 5–10 °C. Below that the adhesive is too firm to flow into the board surface and never forms a proper bond.
An unheated warehouse in winter will produce tape failures that vanish in spring, with nothing else having changed. If your problem is seasonal, this is why.
Keep tape indoors overnight rather than on an outside bench, and give cold rolls an hour to come up to room temperature before use. Where the warehouse genuinely cannot be warmed, a cold-temperature adhesive exists and is worth specifying.
Acrylic or solvent?
Acrylic is quiet, almost odourless, holds its adhesion over long storage, and performs well in cold. It is the right default for most packing benches, particularly where someone is working at it all day.
Solvent has a stronger initial grab, which helps on dusty recycled board. It is louder, has a noticeable smell, and costs more.
If your tape lifts on recycled cartons in a warm warehouse, solvent may genuinely help. If it fails only in winter, the answer is temperature, not adhesive.
The sealing pattern matters more than the tape
A single strip along the centre seam is the most common seal and the weakest. The flaps are held together but nothing resists them being pushed apart at the ends, which is exactly what happens when a parcel is dropped or compressed.
Use an H-seal: the centre seam plus both end seams. It takes one extra second and roughly triples the resistance to the failure that actually occurs. For heavy loads, add strips down the side seams too.
Leave 50–75 mm of tape over each end of the seam. Tape that stops exactly at the edge peels from that edge.
Check the dispenser before blaming the roll
A blunt blade tears rather than cuts, leaving a ragged end that lifts. A seized roller means the tape is dragged rather than rolled on, so it is never pressed down properly.
Tape guns are cheap and they wear out. If one bench has failures and another does not, with the same tape, it is the gun.
When it really is the tape
Genuine product faults do exist and have a recognisable signature: the failure is consistent across every roll in the carton, from the first use, in normal conditions, with correct technique. If that is what you are seeing, tell your supplier and send a photograph of the roll label.
What is not a product fault is a roll that has been stored in direct sunlight or near a heater for months. Adhesive degrades with heat and time. Rotate tape stock like anything else, and keep it out of the warm corner of the warehouse.
