Packaging for Jewellery Businesses

Small, valuable and worth stealing. Jewellery packaging is the one category where looking unremarkable on the outside is a feature.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Jewellery is unusual among ecommerce categories: the packaging problem is not really protection. A ring in a box survives almost any journey. The problems are theft, loss and presentation, and only one of those is solved by padding.

Do not advertise what is inside

Parcel theft is opportunistic and it targets what looks worth taking. Branded outer packaging that says the name of a jewellery business is the single clearest signal a thief gets, and it is entirely self-inflicted.

The standard practice among established jewellers is a plain outer with no branding, no product description on the label, and the presentation packaging inside where the customer sees it on opening. You lose nothing — the unboxing experience is unchanged — and you remove the signal.

Size it to fit a letterbox where you can

A parcel that fits through a letterbox is not left on a doorstep, is not waiting for a redelivery, and costs less to send. For most jewellery this is achievable, and it eliminates the largest single cause of lost parcels in one decision.

The constraint is depth rather than area. Check your carrier’s maximum thickness — typically 20–25 mm — and choose a presentation box that fits within it. A slim box inside a flat mailer beats a deep box in a padded envelope on every measure that matters.

Chains, stones and settings

Chains tangle, and a tangled chain arriving at a customer reads as carelessness. A card insert with a slit, or a small tissue wrap that holds the chain flat, prevents it entirely.

Set stones need to be immobilised rather than cushioned. Movement inside a presentation box is what loosens claws and scratches polished surfaces, so a snug insert does more good than padding around the outside of the box.

When padding is genuinely needed

For anything in a rigid presentation box, a padded mailer is sensible: it protects the box, and a crushed presentation box produces a complaint even when the jewellery inside is perfect. For flat items in a card mount, a plain mailer or a document envelope is enough.

The smallest padded sizes — #000 and #0 in the standard trade numbering — cover most jewellery. Larger sizes waste postage and give the contents room to move.

Proof of delivery is packaging-adjacent

For higher-value pieces, a signed service is worth more than any packaging upgrade. Packaging protects against damage; it does nothing about a disputed delivery, which is the more common and more expensive loss in this category.

Buying at volume

Jewellery businesses tend to need small quantities of several different things rather than large quantities of one, which is exactly where the 1,000-unit minimum needs thinking about. A thousand small padded mailers is a realistic annual quantity for most jewellers — a thousand of four different sizes usually is not.

Our honest advice is to standardise on one padded size and one flat mailer, and to order both at the minimum, rather than spreading the same budget across sizes you will still have in three years.
